Hey there ladies and gents,

My name is U-Wen and I'm the MUTW (Melb Uni Taichi & Wushu) public relations/events/fight club monkey. Just wanted to drop in and say hello to our brothers and sisters of the art at Monash!

Just so  you know a bit more about me, I have been training for about 5 years now - I started in 2002 training under Master Tang himself, stopped mid-2005 to focus on VCE (cause that worked...) and started again 2007 under Master Liu at Melbourne. I also went to Melbourne High School with the one and only Michael Ngan, so you can blame him for my presence.

MUTW itself is, let's be honest, quite a fledgling society still, and fairly inexperienced, so we're looking to see what you guys are doing and complaining, hoping to rip off some of what you are doing, only not as well seeing as how we've got fewer members, and a lower average experience/skill level.

So anyway, I'm hoping for a nice period of enhanced co-operation, caring and sharing with you lot, and we (I) will be talking to you guys more often now!

I'm contactable at uwen5793@hotmail.com if you are interested in contacting MUTW, and we have a Facebook thing too - maybe we can put on demonstrations together, or something. Collaborate on planning events, y'know? Maybe even a Fight Club.

I'll keep you updated on what we're doing at MUTW, and I'll be hanging around these forums too as we don't have our own yet. So, all the best, and train hard!

Hi U-Wen,

Monash Wushu has a good relationship with Melbourne Uni Taichi & Wushu Club which goes back over 10 years.

Some of our activities together included cross training, where Monash will go over to Melbourne to train and vice versa. Last year we had the Melbourne guys over, where we also held a BBQ before training (tip - not the best idea to stuff yourself before jump kicks).

Hopefully we will have more cross training sessions in the future.

As for improving your club, I suggest not only having a solid committee, but good communication between Master Liu and you guys. In the end, Master Liu should be guiding you through effective training techniques and the committee should be doing their bit to make it enjoyable for the club.

Just wondering, have you been in contact with your committee about this?

In regards to your "fight club", I'll be straight forward and say no. A similar idea has come up recently where some guy wanted a mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament. Some of the reasons for declining this included:

  • Modern wushu (taolu) is not practiced as a self defence martial art, but more self development
  • Issues with insurance arise
  • We don't train in sanshou/sanda
  • A "fight club" generally has negative perceptions and not have any direct benefits to the individuals or the wushu club(s)
  • There would be no structure and/or rules
  • It is illegal

Anyway, have a chat to your committee - see if you guys wanna do another cross training thing after exams.

Cheers,

Tony

Don't worry, the club know I'm talking to you guys. As for the fight club thing, I was joking...

Cross-training after exams sounds viable, when and where is good for you? Although I can't guarantee that we'll have many people turning up to it; also we'll have to remember that our exam dates are very different.

I am also aware that the clubs have some sort of a relationship, although it does seem limited to just the occasional meet and train. I was hoping to elaborate on it a bit more. It's always worth having better friends.

Hey there people,

Hope you've all enjoyed your breaks and are back to training. We're still interested in cross-training, and we're fairly free and easy at the moment still, so if you have a possible date and are interested, we'd like to talk to you!

Hi mate,  hope you had a good break too. We've been back to training, and well and truly into the swing of things. Well, some of us are, at least. I know of a couple people who are still on holidays. =)

If you're still keen on the cross training, by all means please propose a date, as long as it's after the 2nd of Feb, as the hall is currently undergoing maintenance and so we're not training there. We train Monday nights 8:30 - 10:30 and Thursday nights 8 - 10. The recommendation would be for 8 - 10, seeing as many of you would still have to travel a fair bit afterwards. Also, once March starts, I'm sure both our clubs will have our hands full with the new year's intake, so that's not a good time either.

Don't forget to make sure that your committee approves of all this, as well as Master Liu. Propose a time, and we'll go from there!
